BALF was performed in 96 Wistar rats, and the mean content of ergosterol in the BALF was measured by the spectrophotometry method. The bronchoalveolar fungal culture was conducted by inoculating the BALF onto the membrane for 36 hours at 37 degrees C. The bronchial allergic reaction in the rat models of BA was established by OVA sensitization. The rats were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 24 each), namely the control group, the model group, the low dosage of ergosterol group, and the high dosage of ergosterol group. The morphological and pathological changes of the airways in the rats were observed under microscope. The detection of bronchial fungal culture showed that the fungal culture positive rates in the bronchoalveolar fluid were 14.71% +/- 2.26% and 25.26% +/- 3.55%, respectively in the model group and the high dosage of ergosterol group. The fungal culture positive rate in the bronchoalveolar fluid was 25.74% +/- 3.85% in the control group. Compared with the control group, the positive rates of fungal culture were significantly higher in the other 3 groups (P < 0.01). The histological examination and pathological changes of the airways showed that the asthma model was established successfully in the rats. The inflammation of the airways in the model group was significantly higher than that in the control group. In the low dosage of ergosterol group and the high dosage of ergosterol group, the airway inflammation and pathological changes were significantly decreased, as compared with the model group (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01).
